Objectives
The objective is to evaluate the impact of web 2.0 trends on the field of learning and training and to see where we are in terms of using web 2.0 innovations in the domain of learning. The rapid growth of social software or web 2.0 applications and supporting technologies (E.g. blogs, podcasts, wikis, social networking sites, social bookmarking, VoIP and P2P services), leads to the fact that the phenomena are also increasingly being used for learning purposes. As it enables different types of learning and training settings, it is an important driver of innovation in learning.
The following learning objectives will guide us through the course:
- Identify and analyse the existing practices and related success factors of major web 2.0 initiatives in the field of learning and training for development;
- Discuss the potential of the social web to stimulate innovation in learning
- Explore the associated challenges and tensions.
- Discuss the potential of social software applications to (re)-connect groups at risk-of-exclusion
- Define the institutional role, and explore what form it could take?
Methodology and learning approach
Reflective practitioners collaborating in an international community of practice
The learning approach is based on building collaborative knowledge and competences in the field of e-learning. It is a blended course, combining face-to-face activities with e-learning sessions. Its modular approach is based on active, constructive learning units and activities.
The face-to-face activities are clustered in a one-week residential course on the campus of the International Training Centre in Turin. They consist of an introduction, an exploration and a general overview using presentations, workshops, hands-on activities, video-conferences and an individual project. The e-learning sessions are delivered online in a virtual learning environment, and interaction will take place through asynchronous discussion boards.
